In recent years, homebuyers – specifically those approaching the closing date on their mortgage loans – have been targeted by aggressive email phishing scams. To avoid these scams, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) encourages homebuyers to follow these tips and others from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
If you are a victim of an email phishing scam, contact your bank or the money transfer company immediately after funds have been transferred to an incorrect account and ask them to attempt a wire recall. Get in touch with your local FBI and state Attorney General office, and file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, regardless of the dollar amount. Be sure to also report the phishing scam to the FTC.
Additional details about these and other tips can be found on the CFPB website here.
